About André Butzer

André Butzer was born in 1973 in Stuttgart, Germany, he lives and works in the near of Los Angeles. He studied at the University for Fine Arts in Hamburg. He became well known through his art, describing himself as a “science fiction expressionist”. Butzer is one of the most distinctive and internationally influential contemporary painters. André Butzer's work is characterized by an intensive exploration of the limits and possibilities of the medium painting, while the artist develops a strong personal universe. The figures and fantasy creatures in André Butzer's paintings are reminiscent of the aesthetics of comics. Butzer himself describes his works as abstract, and yet it is clear to him that one can never escape the figures and the space.

Butzer’s works are being shown at important international collections and museums, among others the Saatchi Gallery in London, the Haus der Kunst in Munich, Germany, the Kunstraum Innsbruck, Austria, Marciano Foundation in L.A. and among the works of the Goetz collection at the ZKM Museum für Neue Kunst in Karlsruhe, Germany.

André Butzer wurde 1973 in Stuttgart geboren, er lebt und arbeitet in der Nähe von Los Angeles. Er studierte an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg.  Bekannt wurde er durch seine Kunst, die ihn als "Science-Fiction-Expressionisten" bezeichnete. Butzer ist einer der markantesten und international einflussreichsten zeitgenössischen Maler. André Butzers Werk ist geprägt von einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit den Grenzen und Möglichkeiten der Medienmalerei, während der Künstler ein starkes persönliches Universum entwickelt. Die Figuren und Fantasiewesen in André Butzers Gemälden erinnern an die Ästhetik der Comics. Butzer selbst beschreibt seine Werke als abstrakt, und doch ist ihm klar, dass man den Figuren und dem Raum nie entkommen kann.

Butzer's Werke werden in bedeutenden internationalen Sammlungen und Museen gezeigt, unter anderem in der Saatchi Gallery in London, im Haus der Kunst in München, im Kunstraum Innsbruck, Österreich, in der Marciano Foundation in L.A. und in der Sammlung Goetz im ZKM Museum für Neue Kunst in Karlsruhe, Deutschland.
