We met Chris Succo 2019 in our second home in Düsseldorf - rather than the local connection, however, we are united by the special view on art that we have in common. This should be expressed in a jointly produced edition published by VogelART. A powerful and very special work was created with "Sappy Sunrise" in black oil paint and partial, colored elements in red and blue. Each print was painted over by Succo in a very pasty color layer using Sennelier Oil Sticks - so no two editions look alike.
Wir trafen Chris Succo 2019 in unserem zweiten Zuhause Düsseldorf – vielmehr als der gemeinsame Schnack verbindet uns aber die besondere Sicht auf Kunst. In einer gemeinsam produzierten Edition published by VogelART sollte dies zum Ausdruck kommen. Eine kraftvolle und sehr besondere Arbeit entstand mit „Sappy Sunrise" in schwarzer Ölfarbe und partiellen, farbigen Elementen in Rot und Blau. Jeder Print wurde von Succo im sehr pastosen Farbauftrag mit einem Sennelier Oil Sticks übermalt – somit gleicht kein Blatt dem anderen.
Chris Succo (1979) studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Georg Herold from 2003 to 2009. Herold recognized Chris Succo's extraordinary talent early on and accepted him as a master student. Succo then moved to London, where he studied under Richard Wentworth at the Royal College of Art from 2010 to 2012.
Chris Succo is known for his distinctive visual language, which oscillates between figuration and abstraction, refinement and rawness. His painting is characterized
by a balance of structure and spontaneity, in which gestural lines, condensations, and layers of color merge with one another. He became particularly well known for his so-called “White
Paintings” and “Spark Paintings,” in which he layers white oil paint over dense glazes of color so that the underlying colors only partially show through. After working with a variety of
processes and materials for years, Succo increasingly dispenses with classic painting tools in his latest works and applies the paint directly to the canvas with his hands. This physical,
immediate approach to the material is in dialogue with his exploration of music, writing, and poetry—areas in which reduction often also gives rise to intense expressiveness. His works refer to
personal memories, photographs, and drawings, but also relate to pop culture, literature, films, and music.
His most recent works on paper represent the materiality and visual universe of his current canvas works. Chris Succo has developed a remarkable international
career since his early years in Germany. As early as 2007, while still a student, First Floor Contemporary in Düsseldorf dedicated a solo exhibition to him. This was followed by numerous solo
exhibitions in Berlin, Oslo, Geneva, London, Paris, New York, Düsseldorf, and Brussels. In recent years, he has shown his work at the Almine Rech Gallery (Brussels and London), Achenbach
Hagemeier (Düsseldorf), the Whitestone Gallery (Hong Kong & Taipei), the High Gallery (Warsaw), Salon Kennedy (Frankfurt), and The Journal Gallery (New York & Los Angeles), among others.
In 2023, he was represented with the exhibitions “Televised Mind” at Almine Rech in Brussels, “White Paintings / Spark Paintings” at the Walter Storms Gallery in Munich, and “Recent Paintings” at
the Whitestone Gallery in Taipei. This was followed in 2024 by the institutional exhibition “Shadows Are Phantoms” at the Sindelfingen City Gallery.
His works have been shown in numerous group exhibitions, including at the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, the Märkisches Museum Witten, the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf,
and international institutions and galleries in Vancouver, Ramsgate, Prague, Milan, Paris, Los Angeles, Miami, Mexico City, and New York. Works by Chris Succo are included in important private
and public collections, including the Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, Kunstsammlung NRW, Chanel Collection, and the Peter Marino Art Foundation. In addition to his painting practice, Succo has
published several artist books, including Blood and Chrome (Distanz Verlag, Berlin 2017), The Price You Pay For Not Being Alone With Your Dying (with Paul Wasserman, 2018), and the catalog Succo
/ Kirkeby (Distanz Verlag, Berlin 2021). Chris Succo lives and works in Düsseldorf. He is represented by The Journal Gallery.
Chris Succo (1979) studierte von 2003 bis 2009 an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf bei Georg Herold. Herold entdeckt früh das außergewöhnliche Talent Chris Succos und nimmt ihn als Meisterschüler auf. Anschließend ging Succo nach London, wo er von 2010 bis 2012 bei Richard Wentworth am Royal College of Art studierte.
Chris Succo ist für seine unverwechselbare Bildsprache bekannt, die zwischen Figuration und Abstraktion, Raffinesse und Rauheit wechselt. Seine Malerei zeichnet sich durch eine Balance aus Struktur und Spontaneität aus, bei der gestische Linien, Verdichtungen und Farbschichten miteinander verschmelzen. Besonders bekannt wurde er mit seinen sogenannten „White Paintings“ und „Spark Paintings“, in denen er über dichte Farblasuren weiße Ölschichten legt, sodass die darunterliegenden Farben nur partiell durchscheinen. Nachdem er über Jahre hinweg mit einer Vielzahl von Prozessen und Materialien gearbeitet hat, verzichtet Succo in seinen neuesten Werken zunehmend auf klassische Malwerkzeuge und trägt die Farben direkt mit den Händen auf die Leinwand auf. Diese physische, unmittelbare Annäherung an das Material steht im Dialog mit seiner Auseinandersetzung mit Musik, Schreiben und Poesie – Bereichen, in denen oft ebenfalls aus der Reduktion heraus eine intensive Ausdruckskraft entsteht. Seine Arbeiten verweisen auf persönliche Erinnerungen, Fotografien und Zeichnungen, beziehen sich aber ebenso auf Popkultur, Literatur, Filme und Musik.
Die jüngsten Arbeiten auf Papier repräsentieren die Materialität und das visuelle Universum seiner aktuellen Leinwandarbeiten. Chris Succo hat seit seinen frühen Jahren in Deutschland eine
bemerkenswerte internationale Karriere entwickelt. Bereits 2007, noch während seines Studiums, widmete ihm First Floor Contemporary in Düsseldorf eine Einzelausstellung. Es folgten zahlreiche
Einzelausstellungen in Berlin, Oslo, Genf, London, Paris, New York, Düsseldorf und Brüssel. In den vergangenen Jahren zeigte er seine Werke unter anderem in der Almine Rech Gallery (Brüssel und
London), bei Achenbach Hagemeier (Düsseldorf), der Whitestone Gallery (Hong Kong & Taipei), der High Gallery (Warschau), Salon Kennedy (Frankfurt) sowie The Journal Gallery (New York &
