We have been fascinated by the work of Jan-Ole Schiemann for quite some time. The superimpositions and levels in his painting, which are created, among other things, by his stencil technique, appear in a special way absolutely contemporary and old-masterly at the same time. In February 2020 his great solo exhibition at Nino Mier in Los Angeles triggered the desire to realize an edition with Jan-Ole. Two weeks later we visited him in his Cologne studio. Thanks to common sympathy we decided to develop an edition together. The stencils were to be transformed from their function as painting tools that would later be thrown away into the central element of an unique edition - upcycling par excellence. Each of the 16 large-format editions is therefore unique. Jan-Ole cut 16 different cut-outs/stencils by hand and worked on them with color. The basic motive created especially for the edition was reproduced and mounted on MDF. This motive and the stencil, which is placed in front of it at a certain distance, are delivered in a handmade frame.  In this way 16 different works in the format 100 x 80 cm were created for VogelART.

Jan-Ole Schiemann (1983) is an artist living in Cologne. He studied fine arts at the Kunsthochschule Kassel and later with Albert Oehlen and Andreas Schulze at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where Schiemann graduated with Andreas Schulze.

In his work, Jan-Ole Schiemann refers to the traditions of painting and questions them through collage-based techniques by constructing pictures that are both challenging and playful. Almost transparently, he weaves and overlays structures, logos, topographies, graffiti and everyday textures. With exhibitions in Seoul, New York and Los Angeles, Jan-Ole Schiemann has become one of the most prominent young artists of his generation.
