The work of SUPERFLEX has inspired us for many years. When we met for the first time in Copenhagen in November 2022, it was very clear that we would make an edition together and the first ideas were quickly born. In December, the realization of INTERFACE BRICK followed.

Interface Brick is a serie of sculptures for humans which can also be used as a building block for underwater construction. Designed to meet the needs and preferences of marine life, the work is made of glazed ceramics and features a labyrinth of cracks and holes, creating pathways and allowing for the circulation of air and water. The surface almost appears organic, and the glaze is glossy, so that it looks as if it’s just come out of water. The porous form is suited for microorganisms – a universe of creatures that inhabit the crevices of underwater structures. Many of these creatures, like plankton, are so small that they are imperceptible to the human eye, but they are crucial for healthy ecosystems.

Produced in an series of 30, each Interface Brick is in a different shade of pink, a color which is scientifically known to propagate coral polyp growth. Coral polyps are some of the greatest architects of the ocean, building complex underwater cities that become home for fish, algae, and other creatures. The ocean’s cities are a complex form of urban life, and as sea levels rise, these will become part of our urban life. Humans have taken away the fishes’ houses to make our own, and now we’re building new houses for ocean life, so that cities on land can be made more compatible with cities underwater.

Interface Brick is part of SUPERFLEX’s vision for a sculptural infrastructure that fosters biodiversity and acknowledges the interdependency of all species. Surfaces are interfaces, places for encounters between species.

The Edition INTERFACE BRICK consists of ceramics. It’s designed to be reminiscent of marine sponges, and the pink color is scientifically known to promote the growth of coral polyps. Thirty ceramic blocks of different pink color in the format 23 x 11.5 x 7.5 cm were created. They can be placed both outdoors and indoors.

SUPERFLEX was founded in 1993 by Jakob Fenger, Bjørnstjerne Christiansen and Rasmus Rosengren Nielsen. Conceived as an extended collective, SUPERFLEX has consistently collaborated with a wide range of collaborators, from gardeners to engineers to spectators. Engaging with alternative models for creating social and economic organization, works have taken the form of energy systems, beverages, sculptures, copies, hypnosis sessions, infrastructure, paintings, nurseries, contracts, and public spaces.

Working both inside and outside the physical location of the exhibition space, SUPERFLEX has been engaged in large-scale public space projects since the opening of the award-winning Superkilen in 2011. These projects often include participation involving the contribution of local communities, professionals and children. To push the idea of collaboration even further, more recent work has solicited the participation of other species. SUPERFLEX has developed a new kind of urbanism that includes the perspectives of plants and animals and aims to move society toward interspecies living. For SUPERFLEX, perhaps the best idea comes from a fish. They are represented by Kukje Gallery, Nils Stærk, OMR, von Bartha and 1301PE, among others.

SUPERFLEX are represented in museums internationally, they have been shown at Le Bicolore, Maison Du Danemark, Paris; Pinacoteca Agnelli Turin, Italy; Ayer Gallery, Mexico; Viborg Kunsthal, Denmark; Kunsthaus Graz; Turku Art Museum, Finland; Colby College Museum of Art, USA; Centro de Creación Contemporánea de Andalusia, Spain; Copenhagen Contemporary, Denmark; CAM - Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, USA; Tate Modern, UK; DIAS - Digital Interactive Art Space, Denmark; 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Japan; Museum of Tomorrow, Brazil; Pérez Art Museum, USA; Lunds Konsthall, Sweden; MAC, Chile; FRAC Normandie Caen, France; Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Denmark; Fundación Jumex, Mexico; Jousse-Enterprise Paris, France; Musée d'Art Moderne St. Etienne, France; Sprengel Museum, Germany; MUT - Museum unter Tage, Germany; MAAT - Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology Lisbon, Portugal; Fermynwoods Contemporary Art, UK; CAPC - musée d'art contemporain de Bordeaux, France; Bundeskunsthalle, Germany; Sheldon Museum of Art, USA; Yuz Museum Shanghai, China and many more.

SUPERFLEX sind international in Museen vertreten, sie waren bisher zu sehen in Le Bicolore, Maison Du Danemark, Paris; Pinacoteca Agnelli Turin, Italy; Ayer Gallery, Mexico; Viborg Kunsthal, Denmark; Kunsthaus Graz; Turku Art Museum, Finland; Colby College Museum of Art, USA; Centro de Creación Contemporánea de Andalusia, Spain; Copenhagen Contemporary, Denmark; CAM - Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, USA; Tate Modern, UK; DIAS - Digital Interactive Art Space, Denmark; 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Japan; Museum of Tomorrow, Brazil; Pérez Art Museum, USA; Lunds Konsthall, Sweden; MAC, Chile; FRAC Normandie Caen, France; Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Denmark; Fundación Jumex, Mexico; Jousse-Enterprise Paris, France; Musée d'Art Moderne St. Etienne, France; Sprengel Museum, Germany; MUT - Museum unter Tage, Germany; MAAT - Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology Lisbon, Portugal; Fermynwoods Contemporary Art, UK; CAPC - musée d'art contemporain de Bordeaux, France; Bundeskunsthalle, Germany; Sheldon Museum of Art, USA; Yuz Museum Shanghai, China and many more.
