About Jose Dávila

Jose Dávila (*1974) works with a range of media - including sculpture, installation, collage and photography - to explore both material and form, often appropriating and re-contextualizing history and architecture. He lives and works in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Joint Effort 1, 2 and 3 is a new photo edition Jose Dávila has conceived for Edition Gerd Hatje, accompanying the new beautiful monograph on his sculptural work. Materials have a starring role in Dávila’s work and are presented here with a special focus: Each of the 3 photographs show a detailed view of the materials` fragmentary condition and their contrasting traits. The ratchet and the straps, present throughout his work in most recent years, are what remains after the translation of sketches into three-dimensional works. The remnant of that sketch on paper is transformed into a colorful feature that literally holds everything in place.

Jose Dávila’s work, nurtured by his architecture formation, makes constant reflections on modern architecture and urbanism, contemporary art, its forecasts and failures. With references such as architectural utopias or milestones in twentieth century art, Dávila approaches the vital contradictions between form and function. His hybrid structures can become cold or warm, light and heavy, producing signs of functionality, which are impossible to discern, and whose meaning varies between architecture and art.

Jose Dávila´s works are in several international collections, Museo del Novecento, Firenze, IT; Getty’s PST LA/LA Triennial, Los Angeles, USA; Blueproject Foundation, Barcelona, SP; Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, DE; Marfa Contemporary, Marfa, USA; Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, USA; Gemeentemuseum, Den Haag, NL; Museum Voorlinden, Wassenaar, NL; Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo MUAC, Mexico City, MX; Caixa Forum, Madrid, SP; MoMA PS1, New York, USA; Kunstwerke, Berlin, DE; San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego, USA; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, SP; MAK, Vienna, AT; Fundación/Colección JUMEX, Mexico City, MX; Bass Museum of Art, Miami, USA; Museu de Arte Moderna, Sao Paulo, BR; among others.

Jose Dávila has been awarded with the 2017 Baltic Artists’ Award in the UK and is a 2016 Honoree of the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington DC, USA.
